Welcome to "Your Best Dog" -- together we'll explore the joys and challenges of owning and caring for DOGS (as if you couldn't have already suspected that!)

In addition to helpful advice and reviews, from time to time, I'll likely be ranting about something I don't like -- and, I will give praise where I feel its deserving.

And, I encourage you to "speak your piece" when you feel so moved! Tell us about your Best Dog!

Top Dog Breeds in 2009

According to the American Kennel Club, the top 10 dog breeds registered in 2009 are as follows:
  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Yorkshire Terrier
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Beagle
  6. German Shepherd Dogs
  7. Boxer
  8. Bulldog
  9. Dachshund
  10. Poodle
I like most of the dogs on the above list.  However, the majority are large-breed dogs which I feel should not be kept in apartment or small-yard situations.

Some are more prone to health issues -- hip dysplasia appears to have a higher incidence in German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and back problems are rather common in the dachshund.

And, some dogs require more maintenance -- the poodle needs its hair trimmed regularly, especially during summer, since it does not shed like most dogs.

My personal Best Dog, the Cocker Spaniel, was at #23 on the AKC list for 2009. My grandfather had a miniature cocker, Butch, and he was a very nice dog.  My cocker, Inky, was an off-spring of Butch.

So, what is your best dog?  And, why?
